Golfo Dulce is a tropical fjord in Costa Rica's South Pacific region. Its unique characteristics make it a habitat for incredible marine biodiversity. The gulf's name comes from its lower salinity levels compared to other gulfs, which are due to the influx of several vital rivers that carry rainwater and sediment from the surrounding tropical rainforest.
Sweeter by Nature is an inspiring collaboration between Surf & Ko and the NGO Osa Ecology. It creates a retreat that celebrates movement on water and land while dedicated to supporting local marine and cultural conservation initiatives.
The immersion begins in Golfito to learn about and monitor these sweet waters and their marine life. We will have a session in the water to learn about the corals' state, and we will support a marine regeneration project and a wildlife refuge to collaborate with what its protectors tell us.
The second stage of the immersion will take place at the beautiful Playa Pavones. We will be near the waves for surfing and will also have the opportunity to participate in various cultural practices of the region. These activities include making pre-Hispanic pottery, chocolate-making, attending a chicha party, and enjoying a sound bath to conclude our week in Golfo Dulce.
How does that sound to you?

What’s Included
Sweeter by Nature is an all-inclusive retreat—excluding flights and transfers to Golfito—that offers a balanced program of 50% water activities and 50% land experiences.
During the Golfito days of Sweeter by Nature retreat in June and August, participants will embark on a private boat tour of the Golfo Dulce, where they will learn how to collect scientific data on whales and dolphins alongside local researchers, gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of this unique marine ecosystem. The experience will also include time for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding in the calm, biodiverse waters of the gulf. Additionally, attendees will explore the lush rainforest of Piedras Blancas National Park on a guided hike, immersing themselves in one of Costa Rica’s most pristine ecosystems. The retreat will also offer hands-on marine restoration work, where participants will engage in either coral restoration or mangrove reforestation efforts, learning directly from experts about their crucial role in protecting the region’s delicate marine habitats
At Playa Pavones, we promote surfing and aim to connect participants with the land through corn, cocoa, and music. Join us in embracing our role as active ecosystem participants and social beings who celebrate food, music, and life.
